The Promise to Those Who Await Christ’s Return
The Bible, in Hebrews 9:28, teaches us that Christ sacrificed Himself once to bear the sins of many. Those who eagerly await His return will witness Him appear to bring salvation. The Reward for All
In the book of Matthew 16:27, Jesus assures us:
“The Son of Man will arrive in the splendor of His Father with His angels. He will judge each person based on their deeds.”
This passage highlights that Christ’s return will signify a time of evaluation when each person will receive what they deserve based on their deeds.
The Disciples’ Understanding of Christ’s Return
In John 21:21-23, Peter asks Jesus about what will happen to the disciple John. Jesus replies:
“If I want him to stay until I return, what concern is that of yours? You should focus on following me.”
Some people interpreted this response to suggest that John might not experience death before Christ’s coming. This passage reveals how early Christians perceived Christ’s return as a distinct event separate from death, anticipating a visible occurrence.
The Manner of Christ’s Return
Acts 1:9-11 tells the story of Jesus ascending into heaven, accompanied by a promise from two angels:
“This same Jesus, who went up into heaven before your eyes, will return in the way you saw Him go.”

Every Eye Shall See Him
Revelation 1:7 highlights the universal aspect of Christ’s coming:
“Look, He will arrive with clouds, and all eyes will witness Him, even those who caused Him harm.”
This prophecy implies that everyone will observe Christ’s return, making it an undeniable event for all.
The Powerful Accompaniment of Christ’s Return
In 1 Thessalonians 4:16, there is a portrayal of Christ’s return:
“For the Lord Himself will come down from heaven with a command, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God.”
This passage beautifully captures the moment when Christ returns amidst sounds that announce His presence.
The Transformation at Christ’s Coming
The change that will take place when Christ returns is described in 1 Corinthians 15:51-52 and 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17. It is an event where believers, both living and the dead, will undergo a transformation in an instant. Our earthly bodies will be made imperishable and immortal at the sound of the final trumpet.
The Timing of the Reward
Hebrews 11:39-40 points out:
“And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.”
This passage stresses that the ultimate fulfillment of God’s plan involves all believers, past and present, being perfected together in Christ.
The Assurance of Christ’s Return
In John 14:3, Jesus comforts His disciples with the promise:
“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself.”

Many individuals in the Bible share a belief in the awaited return of the Messiah:
- Enoch, mentioned as the seventh from Adam, made predictions about the Lord’s arrival alongside His saints (Jude 1:14-15).
- Job expressed his anticipation for the Redeemer’s return by affirming, “I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end He will stand on the earth.” (Job 19:25-27).
- David also referenced the Lord’s judgment of the earth with righteousness (Psalm 96:13).
- Daniel prophesied about a time when Michael would intervene on behalf of God’s people for their deliverance (Daniel 12:1).
Eternal Redemption: The Fulfillment of God’s Promises
The Bible’s account of Christ’s return is unambiguous and consistent. Believers are encouraged to await this event, as it signifies the realization of God’s promises, the reward for the faithful, and the ultimate judgment of humanity. Whether through the words of prophets or the teachings of apostles, the overarching message remains unchanged: Christ will come again to rule the living and the dead. Those who are born again in His Spirit and earnestly anticipate His arrival will experience a sense of redemption and everlasting happiness.
