A Priest Upon His Throne: A Vision of the Messiah

The prophecy of The Branch in Zechariah 6:12-13 unveils the Messiah’s mission, combining the roles of king and priest. This dual identity highlights His divine authority and mediation, representing the fullness of His redemptive work:

“And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The Branch; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the Lord:

Even he shall build the temple of the Lord; and he shall bear the glory,
and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne:
and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.” (Zechariah 6:12-13)

This prophecy portrays Jesus as the ultimate King and Priest, fulfilling God’s plan of restoration. As The Branch, He embodies growth, renewal, and divine purpose, perfectly reconciling humanity to God.

“He Shall Grow Up Out of His Place”

The phrase “He shall grow up out of His place” (Zechariah 6:12) emphasizes the humility and divine purpose of the Messiah. Jesus’ origins reflect this, as He was “as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground” (Isaiah 53:2). Born in a manger in Bethlehem and raised in Nazareth, Jesus fulfilled this prophetic imagery, embodying the humility depicted in Psalm 113:5-6:

“Who is like unto the Lord our God, who dwelleth on high,
Who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth!”

God’s ultimate act of humility is seen in Jesus, who, while fully God, walked among humanity to redeem and restore. Despite these humble beginnings, He was destined for exaltation, reflecting God’s work portrayed in Psalm 113:7-8:

“He raiseth up the poor out of the dust,
and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill;
That he may set him with princes,
even with the princes of his people.”

Jesus, “growing up out of His place,” rose to fulfill His divine mission. Through His resurrection and ascension, He lifted humanity from sin, granting believers a place of honor as co-heirs in His kingdom (Romans 8:17, Ephesians 2:6).

“He Shall Build the Temple of the Lord”

The prophecy also declares that The Branch “shall build the temple of the Lord” (Zechariah 6:12). While this initially referred to the rebuilding of the physical temple, its ultimate fulfillment is found in Jesus Christ, who established a greater spiritual reality.

  • Jesus: The True Temple

Jesus described Himself as the true temple, where God’s presence dwells:

“Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.
…But he spake of the temple of his body.”
(John 2:19-21)

This profound statement revealed Jesus as the mediator between God and humanity. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus accomplished what the physical temple foreshadowed, making God’s presence accessible to all who believe.

  • The Spiritual Temple: The Church

The role of The Branch transcends His earthly ministry. Jesus established a spiritual temple, made up of His church, where God’s presence dwells among His people. Believers are described as ‘lively stones,’ being built into this spiritual house, as stated in 1 Peter 2:5:

“Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.”

Jesus is the cornerstone of this temple, as affirmed in Ephesians 2:19-22:

“Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners,
but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord.”

“I Am the Vine”

The imagery of Jesus as The Branch also connects to His declaration in John 15:5:

“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”

Just as The Branch symbolizes restoration and renewal, Jesus as the vine provides the ongoing nourishment and life that believers need to grow and bear fruit. His work as the cornerstone of the temple ensures a lasting connection between God and His people, while His role as the vine sustains and empowers that relationship.

“He Shall Bear the Glory”

The prophecy of The Branch proclaims that the Messiah “shall bear the glory” (Zechariah 6:13). This glory is seen fully in Jesus, who reveals God’s majesty and radiance. Hebrews 1:3 describes Him as “the brightness of His glory, and the express image of His person.”

Furthermore, in Scripture, glory is often associated with light, symbolizing God’s radiant presence and eternal life. The promise of everlasting light in Isaiah 60:19 finds its fulfillment in Jesus:

“The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee:
but the Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory.”

Jesus declared this truth about Himself:

“I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

As the true Light, Jesus dispels the darkness of sin and guides His followers into eternal life. In Him, we see the fullness of God’s glory and presence made manifest, offering hope and salvation to all who believe.

“He Shall Sit and Rule Upon His Throne”

  • Jesus as King

The Vine and The Branch: A Unified Revelation of the Father

The prophecy highlights the Messiah’s kingly authority as the visible manifestation of God’s will. This was fulfilled in Jesus, who declared:

“All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” (Matthew 28:18)

His kingship extends over all creation, bringing justice and mercy to His people.

  • Jesus as Priest

The Messiah is described as a priest, bridging the gap between God and humanity. This eternal role is affirmed in Scripture:

“The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.” (Psalm 110:4)

Jesus fulfilled this divine priesthood, offering Himself as the ultimate sacrifice for sin. Unlike the temporary sacrifices of the Old Testament, His offering was final and complete:

“Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.” (Hebrews 9:12)

Through His sacrifice, Jesus accomplished what the Old Testament priesthood could only foreshadow. He not only mediated between God and humanity but also secured eternal redemption and reconciliation for all who believe. His priesthood stands as a testament to God’s unwavering plan to restore His people.

“The Counsel of Peace”

The uniting of kingly and priestly roles in Jesus brings together “the counsel of peace” (Zechariah 6:13). As the Prince of Peace, Jesus reconciles humanity to God, fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah 9:6:

“For unto us a child is born… and his name shall be called… The Prince of Peace.”

Through His sacrifice, He accomplished reconciliation:

“And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself.” (Colossians 1:20)

The metaphors of The Branch and The Vine beautifully reveal Jesus as the visible manifestation of the Father’s Word and presence. In Him, “dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily” (Colossians 2:9).

  • The Branch: Fulfilling the Father’s Promises

As The Branch, Jesus fulfills the Father’s covenant promises, restoring His people and establishing His kingdom. Through His mission, He brings renewal and growth, embodying God’s plan of redemption foretold in Scripture.

  • The Vine: Sustaining and Empowering Believers

As The Vine, Jesus sustains and empowers His followers, making the Father’s life-giving presence accessible to all who abide in Him. He provides the spiritual nourishment needed to grow and bear fruit in faith, as He declared:

“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” (John 15:5)

Jesus and the Father: A Perfect Reflection

Together, the roles of The Branch and The Vine highlight the Father’s perfect work through Jesus in bringing restoration, renewal, and an ongoing relationship with His people. The Father’s promise of redemption is fulfilled through Jesus as The Branch, while His sustaining power flows through Jesus as The Vine, empowering humanity to live fruitful lives that glorify Him.

The profound connection between Jesus and the Father is revealed in His own words:

“I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.” (John 17:6)

Through Jesus, the invisible God is revealed to humanity. By manifesting the Father’s name, Jesus makes known His character, love, and purpose. His mission is the perfect revelation of the Father’s heart, offering redemption, reconciliation, and eternal life to all who believe. In His life, the fullness of God’s plan is unveiled, drawing those given to Him into a relationship with the one true God.
